The longer those fish stay in the overflow pool, they harder they become to get out. For now flows in the Oak are moderate or optimistically almost medium and mostly clear. Theres a chance of snow showers tomorrow (Wed.) and precipitation at the end of week again. Flows are moderate to medium and slightly stained at least where you might be able to find a slot with open flows to drift. Within a few minutes, an 8 lb steelhead hit and Bill was on his first Lake Ontario fish. Future near term forecast will not make for any new ice. In early November and early December, all Lake Ontario tributaries (Eighteenmile, Johnson, Oak Orchard, Sandy and Salmon Creeks) will see higher flows. Anglers on the Oak reported small pods of Kings on the move thru the fast water areas yesterday. We left the dock at 6:00 and struggled to get our first bites. The green water is ideal but you can often have action in dirtier water then you think. Small boat trollers and casters both in on the action with glow hardware and/or plugs. Mike Ziehm of Niagara Falls reports that he is still getting some salmon and walleye from shore in the gorge casting spinners and jigs. Everything is wide open to fish with no icing conditions. Fishing pressure is light with a few cars seen at each parking spot on the Oak. The other area smaller tribs have medium+ and slightly stained flows. Thru this beginning part of the week, most hook up action has still been mostly for Kings. Back to some winter like weather and temps for now. Even the Oak thanks to starting out so low at the onset of the cold weather at the start of the past weekend, is mostly frozen. Theres still lots of upstream headwater swamp supplies in the Oak. After that for end of week and weekend, the forecast is back to cold temps and another round of measurable snow. Fished pretty much 100- 250 feet of water. A few leftover coho and browns are in the system too. Flows yesterday in the AM were down but did rebound nicely to the mod or almost med flows weve had this season. Mild winters or short duration cold weather lasting into spring is generally considered good for alewife survival, and hopefully a so far mild winter will bode well for alewife. Wash hands often or use a hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available. From a small boat, drifting treated egg skein is a good approach to try, fished under a float. Anglers often find flows still a bit high and a bit stained and for sure cold but thats the nature of steelheading and the chance for a multiple hook up day. Considering that January is usually a bit of an in-between time frame after the fall salmon/brown trout action and before spring steelhead, the few guys out taking advantage of the weather and flows are doing pretty good. For best chances at steelhead action later this winter and spring we might hope for some more colder and typical winter weather for the in between later Dec/early Jan timeframe. To the west, theres not a lot of recent reports but flows should be more like moderate to medium and going toward clear. As the cooler weather continues, expect to see a large influx of both steelhead and brown trout moving up stream to feed on the remaining salmon eggs. With all the high water weve had previously, you might not have predicted any low flows this spring. This mid week warmup should likely only stall the right of drop and clear in the Oak and other area smaller waterways.
